to operate more flights to Gulf countries
Taking into consideration the heavy passenger traffic to Gulf
regions, the Air India has promised to operate more Gulf services.
The favourable move by Air India has come as a reprieve to the three
thousand odd jobseekers bound for the Gulf regions. The Managing
Director of Air India, Mr. Thulasidas informed the Chief Minister,
Mr. Oommen Chandy of the airline's decision to start more flights to
Gulf countries.
The Chief Minister had earlier appealed to Air India and Indian
Airlines to introduce temporary increase in flights to Gulf
countries. In his fax message to the Union Minister for Civil
Aviation, Mr. Praful Patel, he had appealed to the latter to start
special flights from Thiruvananthapuram to Gulf countries. The Chief
Minister had also requested Air India to start at least 10 more
flights from Thiruvananthapuram to Gulf regions mainly for the
convenience of thousands of first-time jobseekers heading for the
Gulf.
Chief Minister, Mr. Oommen Chandy takes charge of NORKA Department
The newly - sworn Chief Minister of Kerala, Mr. Oommen Chandy, has
taken over the charge of the Non-Resident Keralites' Affairs (NORKA)
Department. The Chief Minister who recently expanded his cabinet to
20 ministers, bowed to the wishes of NRKs who appealed to him to
take charge of NORKA Department.
Addressing reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, the Chief Minister said
that the welfare of the NRKs would be the top agenda of his
Government. He added that taking into account the immense
contributions made by the Non-Resident Keralites for the economy of
the State, the Government would do its best to honour the
commitments made to Non-Resident Keralites (NRKs) in the past,
including granting them voting rights and the reduction in airfares
to Gulf countries.
Investor's Exhibition for NRIs in Kochi
The Roots-NRK Development Initiative, the field agency of the
Non-Resident Keralites' Affairs (NORKA) Department, would organize
an Investor's Exhibition and seminar for NRIs and Gulf returnees on
September 17th and 18th in Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Kochi. The
Exhibition and Seminar, aimed at the welfare and rehabilitation of
Gulf returnees, would be a platform for showcasing the investment
opportunities for NRIs in the State's production and financial
sector. Various NRI organizations and NRKs would participate in the
exhibition.
Mr.Dominic Presentation, the Minister for Fisheries and Sports will
inaugurate the exhibition at 10.30 a.m. on 17th. Shri. Sebastian
Paul MP will preside over the inaugural function. Mr. Dinesh Mani,
Worshipful Mayor, Kochi will also be present. The Chief Minister,
Mr.Oommen Chandy will be the Chief Guest in the valedictory session
to be held at 3 p.m. on the 18th. Mr. M.M.Hassan, Ex-Minister, NORKA,
will preside and Mr. Youssuf Ali and Mr.C.K.K.Menon, Directors of
Roots-NRK Development Initiative will felicitate the session.
Centre to consider State's plea for 'NRI-city'
The Centre is considering the proposal from the Kerala Government to
declare a city in the State as 'NRI-city' in recognition of the
enormous contributions made to the State by the vast community of
Non-Resident Keralites settled across the globe.
This was announced by the Minister of State for External Affairs,
Mr. Rao Inderjit Singh, at a session of the Lok Sabha in New Delhi.
The Minister added that Kerala is high on the Central Government's
priority for setting up an NRI city.
